About a decade following the success of the Nissan Rogue, that popular SUV was the inspiration behind a smaller and more affordable model. The new 2022 Nissan Rogue Sport is the latest in the Rogue Sport family. If you’re looking for a value-oriented subcompact SUV with all of the bells and whistles that you’d want in a modern-day vehicle, then the Rogue Sport has got you covered. Between exceptional fuel efficiency, a wide range of features––both as standard and available––and a respectable amount of cargo space at your disposal, the Rogue Sport is the SUV of choice if you’re in the market for a brand-new model.
The 2022 Rogue Sport starts at an MSRP of $24,460, which is less than the regular Rogue.[a] Additionally, all three trim levels are derived from the Rogue’s list of trims, these being the base model, the S, followed by the SV and SL. The main difference here between the Rogue and Rogue Sport is the latter lacks the Platinum trim that the traditional model has, but comparatively, that trim is far pricier than any of its siblings. What you’ll likely enjoy the most about the Rogue Sport comes down to your wants and needs, but the Rogue Sport is designed to accommodate all types of drivers.

Performance
A Premium Powertrain
There’s not much confusion to be had with the Rogue Sport’s powertrain. There’s one available engine that is used across all three trims, and it’s a 2.0L I-4 paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Because of the CVT, driving the Rogue Sport is a smoother experience than your traditional automatic transmission, and it’s one that you need to experience to believe the difference. The engine is different from the turbocharged I-3 inside of the regular Rogue, but given the smaller size of the Rogue Sport, the powertrain is more than sufficient. That turbocharged engine inside of the regular Rogue also pairs with a CVT, so you can rest assured the more affordable vehicle should remain as smooth to drive as the pricier model. With this engine, you can expect a total of 141 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque. Easily, what could be considered the crowning achievement of the Rogue Sport’s powertrain, however, is the fuel efficiency.
Excellent Efficiency
Regardless of which Rogue Sport trim you choose, the 2.0L I-4 engine under the hood will produce exceptional fuel economy ratings in both FWD and AWD configurations. With FWD, you can expect your Rogue Sport to earn EPA-estimated ratings of 25 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. With AWD, the difference isn’t as substantial as you may find elsewhere on competing SUVs, instead slightly lowering the ratings to a respectable 24 MPG city and 30 MPG highway. Considering the price of the Rogue Sport, these fuel economy ratings should save you money in the long run. Granted, a turbocharged engine could significantly bump these ratings upwards, as we see in the regular Rogue. However, the engine inside of the Rogue Sport manages to provide drivers with a more than sufficient experience, one that proves the Rogue Sport is the perfect companion vehicle for all sorts of travel, from commuting to vacationing with the family.

Standard Safety Features
Base model or not, the 2022 Rogue Sport has no shortage of safety features. The vast majority of the included safety features can be found as part of the Nissan Safety Shield 360 safety suite––a suite that comes standard on every Rogue Sport. With this safety suite, you can expect about half a dozen safety features to be available to you at no extra cost, such as Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. The goal of these two safety features is to bring your vehicle to a stop as quickly as possible if the sensors and cameras detect you’re in danger of hitting another vehicle or a pedestrian. Along with these features, you’ll find Rear Automatic Braking, which will alert you if you’re about to strike something when reversing into or out of a parking space, such as a lamppost, shopping cart, etc. Rear Cross-Traffic Alert will also be used when you’re reversing out of a parking space, sending out alerts if a passing vehicle is about to obstruct your path.
The Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite also includes features such as Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning. Accidently crossing lanes can happen to even the most vigilant of drivers, so when your vehicle begins to stray from its lane, the Lane Departure Warning will sound its alert, prompting you to take action and straighten out your vehicle. When you’re intentionally trying to change lanes, however, the Blind Spot Warning will flash indicators on your side mirrors, illuminating to warn you if a vehicle is in your blindspot.
Available Safety Features
A few of the available features are highly worth discussing. One example is the Intelligent Around View Monitor, which combines four cameras positioned around the Rogue Sport to give you a handful of camera angles to view through your infotainment center. All four cameras can combine to form a simulated bird’s-eye view of your vehicle, making it far easier to maneuver into parking spaces. In addition to this, Intelligent Lane Intervention is also paired with Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Driver Alertness, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
With Intelligent Lane Intervention, it works alongside the aforementioned Lane Departure Warning, and by using the sensors built into the front of the vehicle, the Rogue Sport can detect if you’re not traveling correctly in your lane. Once the vehicle has determined it needs to intervene, the Rogue Sport will subtly adjust your braking to straighten the vehicle back out for your safety and others. Intelligent Forward Collision Warning works like other Forward Collision Warning systems, except for one major difference––Intelligent Forward Collision Warning scans two vehicles in front of you, not just the first one. Intelligent Driver Alertness is a fascinating feature that can detect if the driver is distracted or exhausted and will play a sound to regain your attention. These features can easily prevent accidents from occurring or reduce the severity of an unavoidable accident.

High-End Amenities
Inside the Rogue Sport, a host of tech features come standard, and there are a decent amount of upgrades you can opt for too. Aside from technology, some of the best features include amenities that focus on comfort and quality of life. For example, if you invest in either the SV or SL trim, you’ll have an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support. Cloth seats are standard in the Rogue S, but moving up to the SV switches this out for premium cloth, with synthetic leather as an option. Pure leather seats are also available for the Rogue Sport and come standard on the SL. For the best aesthetics, the top trims also include a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather shift knob.
Exciting Tech Features
Technology is one of Nissan’s strong suits, and there are many exciting ways these features work in unison to create a truly next-gen feeling vehicle. A more unique feature is the Rogue Sport’s Advanced Drive-Assist Display––a vertical screen between your gauges that can display a variety of information. For example, you can display turn-by-turn navigation on this screen, leaving more space on your infotainment center for other apps and information.
All of your media and connectivity will be done through the 7-inch infotainment center, consisting of various tech features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and more. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both allow you to use your favorite navigation apps available for download on the included app store, but those who prefer another option can use Nissan’s Door to Door Navigation software. Nissan’s built-in navigation software is superior because it links seamlessly with the Rogue Sport, allowing directions to be displayed on either screen inside of your SUV. Lastly, audio playback is superb in every Rogue Sport configuration. However, drivers looking to upgrade from the already phenomenal standard audio system can opt for a Bose Premium Audio solution built with 8-speakers.
