2026 Nissan Kicks vs 2026 Honda HR-V

Subcompact SUVs are some of the most accessible vehicles in the auto industry, giving you a terrific option to consider when shopping on a budget. Not all of these models are the same, however. When you look at the 2026 Nissan Kicks vs 2026 Honda HR-V, for example, it is easy to see that Nissan gives you a lot more to enjoy at a lower price than the HR-V.

Both of these vehicles can be a lot of fun to drive, which is nice, but you get superior fuel efficiency with the Kicks compared to Honda’s model. This is true whether you prefer front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) with your SUV. Even though these are both subcompact models, the Kicks is incredibly spacious inside with more cargo volume.

We can also see some big differences between them in terms of tech features and what you get with your next vehicle. The Nissan Kicks features a much larger display inside and gives you more standard safety systems, like Blind Spot Warning, compared to the Honda. That you get all of these remarkable features at a lower price with the Kicks caps everything off.

Great Performance With the Nissan Kicks

Although these are both subcompact SUVs, they are still quite fun to drive. You will not find massive power here like you can from something like the Nissan Z sports car, but the Kicks still has a great engine. This helps the Kicks feel fantastic on the road, enhancing its qualities as a daily driver, plus you get remarkable fuel efficiency to take you further.

Impressive Power at a Terrific Price

Overall power and performance might not be the most important thing when looking at subcompact SUVs, but we still find it is a great place to start. After all, you deserve something that is fun to drive. The Kicks has an engine that delivers 141 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque, which is plenty of power for a small vehicle like this, so you get something that feels great.

You can choose either FWD or AWD with the 2026 Nissan Kicks, giving you the freedom to get the kind of experience you prefer. The Honda HR-V has similar performance, but it starts at a substantially higher price. So the Kicks feels terrific on the road, drives beautifully, and is more accessible, which is what we love about it.

Nissan Gives You Greater Gas Mileage

Being fun to drive is important, but we know a lot of people who prioritize excellent fuel economy when shopping for a subcompact SUV. You want a daily driver that gets you around with fewer stops for gas. This also helps you save money as you drive, which is an added bonus for a budget-friendly small SUV like the Kicks.

The 2026 Honda HR-V gets an EPA-estimated 26 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined with FWD. Going with AWD drops those numbers slightly to 25 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined. Those are fine, but we expect just a bit more from a subcompact SUV.

That might be because the 2026 Nissan Kicks is such an incredibly efficient model. With a FWD Kicks, you get an EPA-estimated 28 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highway, and 31 MPG combined fuel efficiency. Going with AWD only drops each of those numbers by 1 MPG. So you can get around in style with the Kicks and make very few stops for gas.

Fantastic Interior Features and Options

A lot of people choose a subcompact SUV because they want something small and affordable. These kinds of SUVs do not have to feel underwhelming, even though they are not as large as some other options out there. Nissan understands this well, and the Kicks has been designed with an incredibly spacious interior that is decked out with a lot of great features.

Lots of Room Inside the Kicks

Interior space is important when looking at any SUV, even subcompact models like these. You want something that is functional, and the room you have inside your vehicle is a big part of that. You can see this perfectly illustrated by how well Nissan has designed the Kicks to give you lots of space inside to take advantage of as you drive each day.

These are both two-row SUVs, as you would expect, that give you comfortable seating for up to five passengers. You get 42.7 inches of leg room up front in the 2026 Kicks, compared to 41.9 inches of front leg room in the Honda HR-V. That is not a massive difference, but it can matter if you have long legs—our taller customers know exactly what we mean.

In terms of cargo space, you get a lot more room inside the Kicks to take advantage of. Nissan gives you 30 cu.ft. of rear cargo space inside the Kicks, as well as 60 cu.ft. of total cargo volume behind the front row. Inside the HR-V, we find just 24.4 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and only 55.1 cu.ft. of total cargo volume; that is enough of a difference to really matter.

Innovative Tech Features to Enjoy

Just as important as the kind of room you get inside your SUV are the sorts of interior features that you can enjoy. Both of these vehicles have three trims available, so what you find depends on the trim you choose. That being said, even the standard features of the Nissan Kicks are quite impressive and go beyond those of the Honda HR-V.

Starting with the 2026 HR-V and its base LX trim, we find a seven-inch driver display, a nine-inch central infotainment screen, and a four-speaker sound system. An eight-speaker sound system is available with the highest EX-L trim, but the screens remain the same. Other options, like dual-zone automatic climate control, are also only offered with the highest trim level.

Looking at the 2026 Nissan Kicks and its base S trim, we find a similar seven-inch instrument cluster display, but a larger 12.3-inch display comes with the top SR trim. Every Kicks features a gorgeous 12.3-inch infotainment display that makes using apps incredibly easy. An available 10-speaker Bose Personal Plus sound system can elevate your daily drive even more.

Advanced Safety Technology

Few things are as important as knowing that your vehicle can help keep you safe as you drive each day. We are happy to see that both the Nissan Kicks and the Honda HR-V have an impressive array of standard safety features. And yet, you get some features standard with the Kicks that are only available on higher trims of the Honda HR-V.

Looking at the 2026 Kicks, it comes with a Forward Collision System that includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. You also get a Rear Collision System that features Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Rear Automatic Braking. Standard Blind-Spot Warning is also included with the Kicks, and Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention is available.

With the 2026 HR-V, Honda includes some nice driver-assistance features, such as a Collision Mitigation Braking System. A Blind Spot Information System and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor are both available for the HR-V, but not on the base LX trim. That is a big oversight that is hard to ignore, especially since the HR-V costs more than the Kicks.

Nissan Makes Shopping On a Budget Easy

Subcompact SUVs can have a lot going for them, and some folks go for these kinds of models simply to get something small and easy to drive. One of the biggest draws of these vehicles, however, is that they typically offer incredibly affordable pricing. That makes it easy to shop on a budget or stretch your dollar further, getting more from your next vehicle.

And yet, not all subcompact SUVs are the same in this regard. The 2026 Honda HR-V starts at $26,500 MSRP for the base LX trim, which is higher than we would like to see. Going with one of the two available upgrades—the Sport or EX-L—only takes that price even higher, surpassing $30,000 at the high end.

With the 2026 Kicks, Nissan provides the base S trim at just $22,730.[a] That is significantly less than Honda’s subcompact SUV. While the higher trims for the Kicks—the SV and SR—raise the price, it remains lower than the HR-V at every step. The top Kicks SR starts at just $27,565 and includes a ton of terrific upgrades without breaking the bank.[a]
