I bet most of you have seen King Kong vs Godzilla. If not the original from 1963, then at least the remake that came out earlier this year called Godzilla vs Kong. For those who've never even heard of this Kaiju battle royale, the two most iconic giant monsters of all time duke it out in a fight to the finish. More than that, this contest had international implications, with King Kong representing America and Godzilla coming from Japan. Just like that epic contest, the 2022 Nissan Armada vs 2022 Ford Expedition features two iconic full-size SUVs battling it out, one from Japan and the other from the United States.

Depending on which country you called home, you saw a different ending to the original King Kong vs Godzilla. Sorry for the spoilers, but American audiences watched King Kong swim off to victory, while viewers in Asia got to see Godzilla live to fight another day. However, in today's automotive competition, there is one clear winner, with Nissan's Godzilla besting Ford's King Kong. These two full-size, three-row SUVs offer room for up to eight passengers and represent an affordable way to get a luxurious family vehicle. In addition, both Nissan and Ford have recently given their respective SUVs a facelift, so the 2022 Nissan Armada and the 2022 Ford Expedition will have more striking looks than older models.

  • Power

A white 2022 Nissan Armada is shown from the front driving on an open road in the rain after winning a 2022 Nissan Armada vs 2022 Ford Expedition comparison.

Nissan and Ford have taken different approaches when it comes to choosing engines for their respective full-size, three-row SUVs. Every model of the 2022 Nissan Armada comes equipped with a 5.6-liter Endurance V8 gas engine. This is a 32-valve engine with a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) configuration. It has an aluminum block and heads and utilizes direct fuel injection. The Nissan V8 engine also has variable valve event and lift to improve engine efficiency, allowing it to produce 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.

    Ford's V6

In contrast, Ford offers three different versions of the same V6 engine on the different trims of the 2022 Ford Expedition. This is a 3.5-liter EcoBoost Turbo V6 gas engine. It has 24 valves in a DOHC configuration with twin turbochargers to boost performance. The engine block is made of die-cast aluminum, while the pistons and cylinder heads are made from an aluminum alloy. It utilizes a combination of direct and port fuel injection and can produce different levels of horsepower and torque depending on the model.

This means that you are pretty much locked into the engine that is assigned to the model of the Expedition you are buying. For example, if you buy the XL, XLT, or STX trims of the 2022 Expedition, you will be getting a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that produces 380 horsepower. The Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims feature a slightly more powerful version of this engine that provides 400 horsepower. The top version of this engine is called a High Output and is only available on the performance-oriented Timberline and Stealth models.

    Nissan vs Ford

As you can see, engine performance on the 2022 Nissan Armada will be consistent across all trims, while the 2022 Ford Expedition will provide different results depending on the trim level that you choose. And not only does Ford require you to pay a premium for engine performance on the Expedition, but only its two high-performance trims also offer more horsepower than the standard Nissan V8 engine.

  • Capability

A red 2022 Nissan Armada is shown from the side parked next to a stream.

Both the 2022 Nissan Armada and the 2022 Ford Expedition are offered with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive systems on both SUVs will provide improved acceleration, but it comes at the expense of bad-weather traction. The four-wheel drive Armada features a switch-operated two-speed transfer case so you can go to rear-wheel drive on the highway to improve fuel economy. Similarly, the Ford Expedition has an available ControlTrac four-wheel drive system that also allows you to switch to rear-wheel drive for highway driving conditions.

    Towing Comparison

One advantage of buying a full-size SUV is the ability to tow sizable trailers. Both the 2022 Nissan Armada and the 2022 Ford Expedition are near the top of their vehicle class in this capability. The Armada can tow up to 8,500 pounds on every trim, while the Expedition has a maximum conventional towing rating of 6,000 pounds unless you opt for the available Heavy-Duty Trailer Towing Package. In other words, you have to pay extra on the 2022 Ford Expedition to match the towing capability that comes standard on the 2022 Nissan Armada.

    Handing and Acceleration

The wheels on the 2022 Nissan Armada range from 18-inches on the lower trims to 20-inches on the mid-level trims, with a full 22-inches offered on the wheels of the top trims. The 2022 Ford Expedition follows these same numbers, except the base model Expedition XL has only 17-inch wheels. In addition, the Expedition has a slightly longer wheelbase of 122.5-inches as compared to the 121.1-inches on the Armada, making parking and turning a bit more of a challenge. Ford also offers the 2022 Expedition in a MAX edition with an almost ridiculous 131.6-inch wheelbase that can be difficult to handle in any sort of tight area.

When it comes to acceleration, the 2022 Nissan Armada should outperform most models of the 2022 Ford Expedition, except the Timberline and Stealth editions with their High Output V6. The V8 engine on the Armada can take it to form 0 to 60 miles per hour in around 5.8 seconds, which is better than the 5.9 seconds of the 400-horsepower Expedition. If you only have Ford's 380-horsepower base engine, the gap will be even larger.

  • Safety

A white 2022 Nissan Armada is shown from the front driving through a city.

Nissan and Ford have both produced a suite of driver assistance safety features. However, Nissan has made its Nissan Safety Shield 360 standard on all models of the 2022 Nissan Armada, while Ford has opted to make its Ford Co-Pilot360 technology features only available on certain models of the 2022 Ford Expedition.

As a result, if you purchase a base model 2022 Nissan Armada S, you will get most of the active features offered as part of the Nissan Safety Shield 360. This is not the case with the 2022 Ford Expedition XL, the entry-level model of Ford's three-row full-size SUV, which does not come with most of the Ford Co-Pilot360 safety systems.

    Safety System Break Down

For example, all models of the 2022 Armada have an intelligent driver alertness system that will sound an alarm if the vehicle detects that you may be losing concentration. It also has Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention to act as an extra set of eyes when you go to change lanes on the highway and even make steering adjustments if you try to change lanes with another vehicle present in your blind spot. The Armada also has High Beam Assist that will automatically turn your vehicle's high beam headlights on and off to match outside lighting conditions. These are just a few of the active safety features that don't come standard on the 2022 Expedition.

Both models do have a number of standard driver-assistance features. This includes an automatic emergency braking system that will bring the SUV to a stop if it detects an imminent collision with another vehicle or pedestrian. Each also has a lane-keeping system that will alert you if you start to drift out of your lane, even using slight steering adjustments to keep your SUV on the straight and narrow. Finally, both the Armada and the Expedition have a rearview camera, although only Nissan makes Rear Automatic Braking standard. This will allow you to back your vehicle out of a parking space without the risk of striking another vehicle, object, or pedestrian.

    The Armada Keeps You Safe

While Ford has done a creditable job with the Ford Co-Pilot360 system, it just doesn't match the number and quality of standard safety features offered with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 on the 2022 Armada. Nissan has truly made safety a standard feature on the Armada.

  • Infotainment

the grey interior of a 2022 Nissan Armada shows the infotainment screen and steering wheel.

Infotainment systems were once limited to the top trims of most models. However, these days, it seems that every automaker offers at least some version of its infotainment system, even on base model vehicles. This is the case with both Nissan and Ford, although each has taken a slightly different approach when equipping its respective full-size three-row SUV, the 2022 Nissan Armada, and the 2022 Ford Expedition.

    NissanConnect

The 2022 Armada features the NissanConnect infotainment system on a standard 12.3-inch color touchscreen. This includes Android Auto integration, wireless Apple CarPlay, door-to-door navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a WiFi hotspot. This will allow you and your seven passengers to stay connected and utilize smartphone apps while cruising in your 2022 Nissan Armada.

The only difference between trim levels on the Armada when it comes to infotainment is that all trims except the base model Armada S have a wireless charger, and the top three trims come with a 13-speaker Bose premium audio system with Bose AudioPilot Noise Compensation Technology. This means that Nissan has equipped almost every model of the 2022 Armada with a state-of-the-art sound system while making sure that the main infotainment system features remain standard across all trim levels.

    SYNC 4

Ford has taken a completely different approach. The standard Ford SYNC 4 system comes with a slightly smaller 12-inch color touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. However, Ford makes you pay extra if you want a premium audio system. The 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed Sound System is very impressive, but it is an optional feature that is only available on the top trims of the 2022 Expedition. This means that you cannot even get a premium sound system as an extra on many models of the Expedition, where Nissan includes its premium audio system on nearly every trim of the 2022 Armada.
