Considering the fact that the Nissan Altima has been around for more than 30 years now (and that its roots go back to the 1950s), it’s no surprise that the 2024 model is a fantastic piece of machinery.

Nissan has had a long time to improve on this impressive car and make it better than ever, and they continue to surprise with new details year after year. It’s tempting to compare cars when you’re shopping for the right one, like looking at the 2024 Nissan Altima vs 2024 Toyota Camry, but it’s easy to get buried under a huge number of specs and details.

While some comparisons can be helpful, and there are some decided advantages that the Altima has over Toyota’s comparable midsize model, we often find it’s better to look at one car and focus on everything it has to offer. Following a mid-generation update last year, the 2024 Nissan Altima is better than ever, as it delivers an exhilarating driving experience along with remarkable features inside and out.

Let’s take a closer look at some of what the Altima has to offer, and you’ll see why so many drivers have made it their car of choice for generations.

Gorgeous Design and Exterior Features

The first thing we tend to notice with any vehicle is its exterior, as it’s hard not to when you approach or catch a peripheral glimpse. This is something Nissan’s designers clearly understand because the Altima has been designed to impress. While it’s unmistakably a sedan, the sleek lines, sharp angles, and sweeping curves found all along its exterior make it a work of art.

Little touches and details can be found across the Altima, from front to back, from the way the front end comes in at the bottom only to flare out again to the sharp contrast in angles and curves at the back end. Every inch of the Altima has been sculpted with care, and it shows from the first moment you see it.

Of course, these design elements and choices aren’t all for show; there’s plenty of functionality to be had along with these stylistic details. Available options like a Nissan Intelligent Key make it easy to get going (something we particularly like on early mornings), while the available moonroof adds an extra touch of sophistication that also makes your daily drive more enjoyable.

Exterior LED lighting is great for visibility at night, while available turn signal indicators on the side mirrors make it easier for other drivers to know what you’re doing. All of this comes together to create a compelling experience and a car that wants to be driven each and every day.

Interior Comfort and Tech to Brag About

The outside might be the first part of a vehicle that you see, but it’s the inside that you’ll spend your time with while on the road. Again, this is something that the folks at Nissan clearly understand, and the 2024 Altima illustrates this beautifully.

Standard features like a six-way driver’s seat and comfortable cloth seating ensure every Altima is fun to drive. As you’d expect, available options take this even further with upgrades that include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and Sport Leather upholstery for an elevated experience each time you hit the road.

What we find particularly impressive is the tech features you’ll discover in the Altima, which is one area in which it surpasses even the popular Toyota Camry. Standard tech in the Altima includes a 7.0-inch infotainment display, a six-speaker sound system, and wireless audio streaming.

Looking at available options, however, we find a stunning 12.3-inch infotainment display that far surpasses the 9.0-inch infotainment screen available in the Camry, along with a 7.0-inch driver display, a nine-speaker Bose Premium sound system, and more. You can get available Nissan Door-to-Door Navigation with voice activation, over-the-air updates, and even a wireless charging pad, elevating your experience to the next level.

Two Bold and Efficient Engines

In terms of performance, the Nissan Altima gives you two engines to choose from, letting you get the kind of power you prefer. The standard engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder beauty that offers up to 188 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, with front-wheel drive for excellent traction and control.

If you’re looking for something with a bit more get-up-and-go, then there’s an available 2.0L turbocharged engine that delivers 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, ensuring you have a great time on the road. Both engines come paired with a continuously variable transmission for a smooth and responsive drive, and you can get larger 19-inch wheels when you get the turbocharged engine.

Fuel efficiency with both of these engines is excellent, even by the standards of other midsize cars. The standard engine gets an estimated 27 MPG in the city, 39 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined. With the turbocharged engine, you get an estimated 25 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined.

By comparison, looking at the powerful V6 engine offered as an upgrade for the Toyota Camry (which competes with the turbocharged Altima), it gets an estimated 22 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. That falls quite a bit behind the Altima, which shows how dedicated Nissan is to letting you go longer between stops for gas.

Standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 Technology

If we had to pick a single favorite detail about the Altima, it would likely be that it comes with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of driver assistance features standard in every model. This means even the starting trim includes an Intelligent Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking mitigation to alert you to a potential crash and help you avoid it.

You also get Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, along with a Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Rear Automatic Braking mitigation as standard on every Altima. High Beam Assist automatic high beams are standard on every model, along with a Blind Spot Warning system, Lane Departure Warning, and an Intelligent Driver Alertness warning.

If you’re looking to upgrade the safety of your Nissan Altima even further, then you have a few available options. You can get Traffic Sign Recognition, which helps spot traffic signs you might miss and keep you updated on speed limits, along with Intelligent Lane Intervention to warn you if you’re drifting from your lane and take action to keep you safe.

A 360-degree Surround View Camera is available to provide you with a virtual view around your vehicle while you’re maneuvering at low speeds, and you can even get ProPILOT Assist hands-on for semi-autonomous freeway driving to make your daily commute or long road trips more relaxing.
